Stat Quo ft. Royce Da 5'9, Phonte (of Little Brother) "homage to Premier" (DAPP Tracks)

boogieb: a dapp one produced by Focus, i think Premier would approve

On a new mixtape cut, three of the game’s most talented emcees join forces with an up-and-coming producer to pay tribute to one of the most important individuals in East Coast hip-hop history – a man who, in addition to working with MC Guru in Gang Starr, helped everyone from KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane to Nas, Biggie, and Jay-Z create genre-defining cuts. Off the upcoming Checks and Balances Mixtape (due out February 24th), Homage to Premier was obviously a labor of love for all involved; Focus’ beat finds him showcasing his talent as an impressionist as Stat Quo, Royce Da 5’9, and Little Brother emcee Phonte each step up to the plate to spit nostalgic, punchline-filled odes to the prolific DJ/producer, and the record’s hook splices together quotable lines from several of the emcees Premier helped make famous. In addition to putting smiles on the faces of old-school heads, Homage to Premier is sure to raise the younger set’s awareness of one of hip-hop’s behind-the-scenes legends. (via djbooth.net)

Phonte (of Little Brother) talks $h!t about Kanye's 808 & Heartbreaks (DAPP News)

Recently, Phonte of Little Brother spoke his mind on Kanye West's latest album, 808s and Heartbreak [click to read] on the Conspiracy Worldwide Radio podcast.

When the topic of Kanye was brought up, Phonte made no secret of how he felt about Ye's latest project. "I heard pretty much most of the Kanye album," he said.
"I didn't like it. I was just like 'get the fuck out of here.'

"I honestly thought it was an act of cowardice," continued Phonte. "I think if you're gonna make the creative leap to sing, then really sing. Let your voice come out, and let people hear all the eccentricities and all the little idiosyncrasies in your voice. That's what makes you uniquely you...Imagine if Aretha Franklin used Auto-Tune on 'Respect.'"

Phonte added that he thought Kanye was "biting T-Pain," and concluded by saying that 808s and Heartbreak was a "case of the reach extending the grasp."

Jay-Z speaks about Blueprint 3 (DAPP News)

"For me, the process of making an album is difficult with so many things going on," he told MTV. "And me, I wanna make it beyond and above. I'm gonna take my time with it. I don't have any quotas, and that's a good thing. It may be too freeing. It's a good thing and a bad thing. You know, I think I need some restrictions. 'Cause if I had restrictions, I would have done it in three weeks. I would have made what I believe to be a great piece of art." (via hophopdx)

hot verse: KanYe West on "gifted" (lyrics)

i'm known for running my mouth,
i will not be accountable for what comes out of
i don't know i might of said it
i was kinda gone and light-headed
my jacket kinda fresh bright reded
as usually my pants kinda tight threaded
it seem like everybody dress tight now
and i just want my credit
don't get it twisted or dreaded
i am the king and will not be headed
to the morgue no time soon bredren
being broke made my head hurt
so i need the bread or an excedrin
that'll only get my engine reving
while ya'll on 10 im on 11
i'ma make the news be on at 7
matter fact im on this very second
i'm in first and ya'll in second
and this verse only add to the freshness
call to the club tell them add to the guest list
what you think? way more bitches?
i can never be to big for my britches
ya'll muthafuckas know who this is
i'm gifted
merry christmas

Mtv's new show: "T.I.'s Road To Redemption" (DAPP News)

On February 10, MTV will premiere Atlanta rapper T.I.'s docu-series T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go, a series that will focus on the 45 days leading to T.I.'s March sentencing.

In 2007, T.I. was charged with two felonies after the rapper was caught attempting to purchase guns outside a shopping center. As a result of the incident, T.I. was ordered to complete 1,000 hours of community service and serve a year in jail beginning in March.

T.I.'s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go will focus on the Atlanta rapper's interaction with teenagers across the country as he shares with them the mistakes he's made in the past and the lessons he's learned. (read more) (via hiphopdx)

Lil Wayne's "G" commercial is for gatorade

boogieb: but how the fu*k was i supposed to know that... i guess all those athletes shoulda gave it away, but then again wayne isn't an athlete, and that lil kid isn't at pro at anything that i know of, and the Jabbawockeez? but seriously, wayne it not an athlete, why is he doing stuff for nike & espn. as long as i dont see him wearing any underarmour, don't think they make that stuff in his size...

You might have seen this ad running if you have been watching college football the past couple of days. We can confirm that this subtle “G” TV ad featuring various pro athletes, and even the JabbaWockeez, is indeed the kick-off to Gatorade’s new branding campaign. It is also confirmed that Lil Wayne is the narrator of this ad as Gatorade will push their new branding with an emphasis on “attitude,” “hustle” and choice.

As a result, Gatorade will do away with the Gatorade - Thirst Quencher tag line and revamp it simply as Gatorade G. The company lists the reason for the rebranding:

"Did Everyone On This XXL Cover Commit Career Suicide?"

boogieb: interesting article about the new cats breaking into the hiphop game:

Have you heard Blu’s latest single? How about B.O.B.’s latest radio interview. Have you seen that video with curren$y or getting ready to buy Kid Cudi’s next album?
In November, XXL Magazine brought us the ten up and comers that they are assuming will dominate the rap in 2009. But have these youngsters been given too much too fast? Some of them didn’t even open their myspace accounts until a few months ago, and now they’re on the cover of XXL magazine. By gracing this cover so soon and early in their careers, most of these kids are writing checks that they won’t be able to cash.

For most of these kids, not much is lined up that would indicate superstardom in 2009. No radio singles, no widespread music videos, no tours, no nothing. Just a few mixtapes, maybe a feature, and a myspace page.
Don’t believe me? Just check the same XXL spread from the previous year, “Leaders of the New School”. Here, we were told that Saigon was gonna take over the rap game, Papoose was going to become the lyrical giant of the mainstream, and Lil Boosie would be dominating the radio. Saigon? Papoose? Lil Boosie? Where are they? I honestly couldn’t tell you. Have you heard one new track from any of these guys? And for the love of God, will someone please tell me who Gorilla Zoe is?

Even XXL in their “Graduation” segment one year later checks on the status of these guys, and admits that the all of them except for Lupe and Plies were unable to put out successful content this year.

The lazy crop of 2008 that failed to make an imprint. And at best, Lupe was able to put out good single, and plies stayed in the mediocre lane with some barely noticeable collabos. Plus, 2008 ended up being for Lil Wayne, Kanye, and T.I., while XXL’s “Leader’s of the New School” failed to make more than an imprint. (via loutube.wordpress.com)

Jay-Z ft. Santogold "brooklyn go hard" (DAPP Videos)

boogieb: DAPP

This video, created by graphic artist Evan Roth (and open sourced here), is pretty neat and all, but more importantly, it has encouraged us to listen to the song several more times and actually engage with how good it is. When we talked to Kanye for our cover story, we asked him about his production on Jay's new album, wondered whether he was going to try to get Hov to go weird. He answered:

I think certain of Jay’s records were perfect for his fans and perfect for big stadiums, and it’s just finding those. It's like, “What You Know" comes once in a blue moon, but I just try to set the studio to blue moon so I get ten of those.

Is "Brooklyn Go Hard" as good as "What You Know"? Our hearts say no, but we put it on last night and realized how serious it really is, especially Jay's Weezy-ish squeaky island cadence in the opening lines and the general sense that he may not ask Kanye to give him 808's-like beats but that their collaboration might inspire Jay to do things he has not done in a while, like sound excited. Or not, maybe he'll just poop out a brick, but at least he got us speculating again.

Roth's video was created for (RED)'s new (RED)Wire site, a new exclusive music subscription service in which half of all $5 monthly membership fees go directly to The Global Fund to help buy and administer medicine to people in Africa living with HIV. Some other artists involved include Coldplay, The Killers, Cat Power and, of course U2. (via fader)

Rihanna engaged to Charlie Brown? (DAPP News)

Word on the street is that after Rihanna and Chris Brown performed at O2 in London on New Years Eve, Rih Rih was showing off some bling. Chris allegedly popped the question to his girlfriend of a few years, before the performance. Witnesses say Rihanna clutched her ring close when walking out the club, but was letting everyone in the club see it. She even wore fingerless gloves in the freezing cold just for the occasion.

One on looker was quoted as saying: "Rihanna was wearing the biggest diamond you can imagine".... (via dyfuse)

Charles Barkley arrested

boogieb: wow. wow charles barkely.

Charles Barkley was pulled over and thus arrested early New Year's Eve morning in Arizona, because of Drinking under the influence. But that isn't the big news. The interesting part of this arrest was the report, and what it said about Charles' reason for speeding. Apparently he was interested in getting Fellatio.

The report begins, with the cop recalling: "He told me that he ran the stop sign because he was in a hurry to pick up the girl I saw get in the passenger seat."

Then, it seems Charles thought he was invincible and started talking in great detail about what his plans were with the woman in question. "He asked me to admit that she was 'hot.' He asked me, 'You want the truth?' When I told him I did he said, 'I was gonna drive around the corner and get a b**w job. He then explained that she had given him a 'b**w job' one week earlier and said it was the best one he had ever had in his life."

As if he hadn't embarrassed himself enough, he decided to talk reckless at the police station. "I'll tattoo my name on your ass" if he helped "get him out of the DUI." According to the report, "He laughed and then quickly corrected himself and said, 'I'll tattoo your name on my ass' and then laughed again."

So I know he's going to have to hire a spitfire attorney to get himself out of this mess. The report also adds "found a handgun in the vehicle", but I assume it was legal because he wasn't charged for it. It was confiscated. (via dyfuse)
